Instructions
1
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
2
Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
3
Beat butter and sugar 3–4 minutes until pale and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
4
Add dry ingredients in 3 additions, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
5
Divide batter between pans. Bake 28–32 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
6
Cool in pans 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.
7
Wrap each layer tightly and refrigerate 45–60 minutes.
8
Beat butter for buttercream until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla, cream, and salt until fluffy.
9
Level cake layers. Fill with buttercream and apply a thin crumb coat over the entire cake. Refrigerate 20 minutes.
10
Tint remaining buttercream in chosen house color(s). Apply in smooth, even sections with an offset spatula; clean edges with a bench scraper.
11
Mix gold luster dust with a few drops of lemon extract or vodka until paintable. Apply in thin coats with a food-safe brush to form a lightning bolt.
12
Shape glasses and lightning bolt accents from black fondant and attach with a dab of buttercream. Let gold dry fully before serving.
